The usual approach is to choose one sound to act as your main level reference, and balance all the other tracks against it.

You end up with a kind of rough, static balance that, later, you can go on to refine with dynamics processing, automation, mutes and all your own neat little mixing tricks. So how do you make sense of it all before you can begin to mix? The first and foremost process for any engineer to perform is what I call a ‘level and pan mix’: a stage during which you establish the initial gains for each source and create some basic separation through panning. Nobody wants to go for the nuclear option, particularly if it’s a promising track and artist. Me: “Too large? We discussed this for a whole hour, didn’t we? Anything above 60 tracks will take me at least a week.” Me: “Server? What’s wrong with the Dropbox?”Īrtist: “Er, the files are a wee bit too large.” you know that EDM track you said you’d mix for us?”Īrtist: “I’ve uploaded it to the server.” It might even mean turning down a project. If you’re not working at the level where you can afford the luxury of an assistant to weed through the mess and set the mix session up for you, at best this means a lot of work and time spent on setting up the project. But even rock and indie projects from traditional four or five-piece bands can still leave you confronted by what feels like a million layered parts, with stacks of doubled and overdubbed guitar parts, multiple mics on everything, huge vocal arrangements and so on. This is often due to the extensive layering of sounds, shaped with heavy band-pass filtering, that plays such a huge part in the overall ‘colour’ of tracks in these genres. Mix engineers who specialise in mainstream pop, EDM or hip-hop are often presented with projects involving high track counts.
